REXDAN Vessel presented at OneHealth International Conference

In the context of the OneHealth International Conference attendance organised by the Romanian Academy, the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Bucharest and the Federation of European Academies of Medicine, researchers from Switzerland, France, Great Britain, Ghana, Spain and Romania came together to disseminate scientific results in the field of the environmental and health sciences in the national and international academic community.

About OneHealth Conference

OneHealth is an integrative concept that refers to the interdependencies between human health, animal health and the environment and it is defined by the One Health High Level Expert Panel of the European Union as an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimise the health of people, animals, and ecosystems. The Conference was comprised of a plenary session and debate sessions. and followed the World Health Organization vision and addressed the challenges in health, environment and climate changes. Sustainable development has to eliminate the disease burden caused by unhealthy environments, through preventive action in relevant sectors, and which manages environmental risks to health. In a multidisciplinary approach, the international experts discussed the opportunities offered by international collaborations in determining the specific parameters and indicators of this concept.

The importance of SUNDANSE project

During this prestigious Conference, Mr. Prof. Dr. Eng. Puiu Lucian Georgescu, General Director of the REXDAN research infrastructure, was invited to present the paper entitled “REXDAN Project: Pollution with microplastics of the Danube in the Galatzi area”. Professor Georgescu’s presentation included innovative proposals for contributions based on the activities carried out within the SUNDANSE, a project funded under the Horizon Europe Programme.

The achievements of the REXDAN infrastructure were appreciated as being special opportunities for the experimental basis of future partnerships to ensure
cutting-edge scientific research in the field of the OneHealth concept. SUNDANSE project plays an essential role both through its financial value (over 9 million Euros) and through the specificity of the frontier research activities, being considered a successful precursor project, at national and international level, due to the uniqueness of the innovative research techniques having as a convergence point the research vessel REXDAN. Given the proposed solutions, the SUNDANSE project plays a key role in achieving a better climate and a restored natural environment in the Danube River ecosystem.

The SUNDANSE consortium is coordinated by “Dunărea de Jos” University of Galați based in Galați (Romania), and brings together 20 innovation stakeholders and educational entities from 10 different European countries – Romania, France, Belgium, Israel, Serbia, Estonia, Ukraine, Austria, Bulgaria and Ireland.
