SUNDANSE

Sustainable Sediment solutions for the Danube - Black Sea system

SUNDANSE is a 48 months long initiative that brings together 20 innovation stakeholders and educational entities from 10 different European countries – Romania, France, Belgium, Israel, Serbia, Estonia, Ukraine, Austria, Bulgaria and Ireland. Throughout the duration of the project, SUNDANSE will launch two Open Calls and distribute financial support to at least five Associated Regions (up to 100 000€ each).

What are sediments?

Sediments are solid materials that are moved and deposited in new locations. They can consist of rocks, minerals, and the remains of plants and animals. Sediments can range in size from tiny grains of sand to large boulders.

They play a crucial role in enriching the soil with nutrients, making areas rich in sediments often rich in biodiversity.

Climate change increases erosion and flooding, alters river flows, and raises sea levels, all of which disrupt sediment dynamics. These changes can degrade soil and habitats, threaten infrastructure, and impact biodiversity. Integrated management is essential to mitigate these risks and sustain ecosystems and human activities.

Project Objectives

Create a Sediment Management Handbook for the Danube River basin, including intervention strategies.
Develop and validate a Sediment Prediction Tool using measurement and monitoring to better predict sediment transport and impacts.
Enhance measurement and monitoring infrastructure to improve the accuracy of sediment quantity and quality data for management frameworks.
Test and validate sediment management solutions in three locations to improve sediment quantity and quality.
Assess the applicability of solutions to other regions and EU river basins, and create an Action Plan and Roadmap for their use.
Engage key stakeholders in European water and sediment management.

SUNDANSE is part of the EU Mission "Restore our Ocean & Waters" and the Danube & Black Sea Lighthouse

EU missions - restore our oceans and waters

The EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters” aims to protect and restore the health of our ocean and waters through research and innovation, citizen engagement and blue investments.

Four lighthouse areas were created in four major EU sea and river basins in order to achieve the Mission goals.

These Mission Lighthouses are sites to pilot, demonstrate, develop, and deploy Mission activities across EU seas and river basins: Atlantic-Arctic, Mediterranean Sea, Baltic-North Sea, and Danube-Black Sea. Each of these lighthouses is coordinated by a CSA project and accompanied by several IAs.

The Danube Lighthouse is one of the four Lighthouses within the Mission Ocean & Waters. Besides SUNDANSE, it currently includes five other projects: EcoDaLLi as Coordination and Support Action (CSA) and four Innovation Actions (IAs): DANUBE4all, DALIA, DaWetRest and Restore4Life.
