SEDIMETAL:

Governance-Based Toxic Metal Screening for Safer Rural Waters

LEAD AUTHORITY

Văsieni Municipality

Region

Ialoveni district

City, Country

THE CHALLENGE

Potential toxicity hazards

Văsieni Municipality is facing a significant knowledge gap concerning sediment quality in the Botna River, a low-flow tributary of the Dniester. The surrounding area is intensively used for agriculture, while historical fertiliser and agrochemical use, soil erosion, and diffuse runoff may have contributed to the accumulation of toxic metals in river sediments. Because the river has a low average discharge, contaminants can remain stored in sediments for long periods and may be remobilised during rainfall or higher-flow events.

No structured sediment quality assessment has previously been carried out in the local river section, leaving the municipality without reliable data on contamination levels, possible accumulation zones, or priority management measures. The project addresses the SUNDANSE thematic area of sediment quality assessment, including the identification of potential pollution sources, combined with stakeholder awareness and evidence-based sediment governance.

THE SOLUTION

Data generation

SEDIMETAL will apply and adapt two SUNDANSE replication methodologies: A1 – Baseline Assessment of the Target Area and A8 – Toxic Metal Contamination Assessment in Sediment Samples. The project will first assess local river conditions, land use, erosion pressures, runoff pathways, and sediment deposition areas. Three representative sampling locations will then be selected: an upstream reference point, a section within the village, and a downstream agricultural section.

Sediment samples will be analysed by an accredited laboratory for priority toxic metals such as lead, cadmium, copper, and zinc, using recognised analytical methods. Results will be compared with relevant sediment quality benchmarks to identify potential hotspots and indicative risk levels. The findings will be translated into a simplified sediment risk map and a Regional Sediment Action Plan defining preventive measures, responsible institutions, monitoring priorities, and next steps for long-term sediment management.

THE IMPACT

Informed decision-making

The project will provide Văsieni with its first validated evidence base on toxic metal contamination in Botna River sediments. This will enable the municipality to move from assumptions to informed environmental decision-making and to identify whether preventive action or further monitoring is required. The main benefits for the local community include better protection of irrigation water, agricultural land, and downstream ecosystems, as well as increased awareness of the links between farming practices, runoff, sediment quality, and water protection.

Farmers, public authorities, environmental institutions, and residents will be engaged through a stakeholder workshop where findings and practical recommendations will be discussed. The resulting Regional Sediment Action Plan will also support future funding applications and guide proportionate local interventions. More broadly, the project will create a transferable sediment-screening model that can be replicated by other small rural municipalities in the Dniester and Prut river basins.
